The Complete Sitka Cruise Port Guide

Cruise passengers may arrive in Sitka in one of two ways: by docking at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal or by anchoring offshore and coming ashore on a tender boat. Harrigan Centennial Hall is not a cruise dock; it is the main downtown transportation and visitor hub.

Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal
The Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal is a deep-water cruise ship dock located several miles north of downtown Sitka. Most large cruise ships (Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises) tie up directly at the terminal, allowing passengers to walk off the ship onto the dock.

The terminal has shops, food, restrooms, a few tour operators and a shuttle-loading area.

Complimentary shuttle buses transport passengers between the terminal and downtown Sitka. The ride generally takes about 10–15 minutes, although traffic and crowds can increase travel time. Shuttle reservations are strongly recommended on busy port days.

Ships That Tender Passengers
Some cruise ships do not dock at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal. Instead, they anchor offshore and use smaller boats, called tenders, to carry passengers between the ship and shore.

Tender passengers usually arrive much closer to downtown than passengers using the main cruise terminal. However, tendering can take extra time because passengers must board the smaller boats in groups. Tender service may also be affected by weather, sea conditions and the ship’s operating schedule.

Passengers should follow the instructions provided by their cruise line because the tender landing location and boarding procedures can vary by ship.

Harrigan Centennial Hall
Harrigan Centennial Hall is located at 330 Harbor Drive in downtown Sitka. It serves as the primary downtown drop-off and pickup location for shuttle passengers traveling to and from the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal.

Once passengers arrive at Centennial Hall, they are within walking distance of downtown shops, restaurants, St. Michael’s Cathedral, Castle Hill, Crescent Harbor and several museums and historic attractions. Local tour operators, taxis and excursion vehicles also commonly meet guests in this area.

Harrigan Centennial Hall is not where the large cruise ships dock. Think of it as Sitka’s downtown cruise transportation center:
Cruise ship docks at the terminal → passengers ride the shuttle → shuttle arrives at Harrigan Centennial Hall → passengers explore downtown Sitka.

For tendering ships, the route is different:
Cruise ship anchors offshore → passengers board a tender boat → tender brings passengers ashore near downtown.

If your ship is docked at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal, the complimentary shuttle is the easiest way to travel between the cruise terminal and downtown Sitka. Shuttles run continuously throughout the day, transporting passengers to and from Harrigan Centennial Hall, the main downtown shuttle stop.

The shuttle ride typically takes about 10–15 minutes, but travel times can be longer on busy cruise days. When multiple ships are in port, increased traffic and the number of passengers boarding can create longer waits and slower travel times. During peak periods, it's wise to build extra time into your schedule rather than waiting until the last shuttle.

Know Your Return Times
One of the most common mistakes visitors make is assuming the final shuttle departure is the same as their ship's all-aboard time. In many cases, it is not.

The final shuttle leaves downtown before your ship's scheduled all-aboard time to allow passengers enough time to travel back to the cruise terminal and board the ship. If you miss the last shuttle, you may need to arrange alternate transportation at your own expense—if one is available.

Before heading into town, check the information posted by your cruise line or at the gangway for:

• Your ship's final shuttle departure from downtown.

• Your ship's all-aboard time.

• Your ship's scheduled departure time.

These times can vary from one cruise ship to another, even when ships are in port on the same day.

If you're unsure about the shuttle schedule, ask a crew member or visit the shore excursion desk before leaving the ship. It's always better to arrive back at Harrigan Centennial Hall a little early than to risk missing the final shuttle.
